Go Down Moses and other African-American Spirituals have Deep meaning

Go down Moses

Way down in Egypt’s land

African-Americans have always resonated with the Judeo-Christian religions.

Tell Ole Pharoah, “To let my people go.”

African American Spiritual Songs were Born

As a result, the Negro Spiritual was born. It’s heartfelt beauty moving people all over the world. But, there is more to these spirituals than submission to God. Many songs have double meanings.

Steal away, Steal away, Steal away to Jesus.

Did you know that Jesus was the name of a slave ship.

Steal away. Steal away home . . .I ain’t got long to stay here.

There is an old proverb; “Some people mistake crying for singing.”

Many songs were coded messages

“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, coming for to carry me home” was a code letting everyone know that the conductor for the underground railroad would be here soon. Get ready to go!

We were always trying to be free!
